Nuk ishte për shkak të klimës, apo për të ndihmuar biznesin amerikan. Ai dëshironte t’i tregonte gishtin botës - dhe ky ishte rasti më i mirë. Por pasojat do të jenë tragjike për globin.

Vendimi i Donald Trump për t’u tërhequr nga marrëveshja e klimës së Parisit nuk ka të bëjë me klimën. Dhe pavarësisht retorikës së tij të mbingarkuar në lidhje me barrën “e madhe” dhe “drakoniane”, që marrëveshja do të impononte në ekonominë amerikane, por vendimi i Trump nuk ishte në të vërtetë për këtë. Angazhimet e Amerikës nën marrëveshjen e Parisit, si ato të 194 vendeve të tjera bashkëpunuese, ishin vullnetare. Pra, dëmi i saj karshi ekonomisë amerikane ishte imagjinare.

Tërheqja e menjëhershme e Trump nga ky kompromis shumëpalësh i hartuar me kujdes ishte një shuplakë diplomatike dhe politike: ishte për t’i treguar gishtin e mesëm botës, duke i kujtuar bazës së tij se ai ndan ankthet e saj kundrejt elitave dhe shkencëtarëve të zgjuar dhe të pemë-përaqfuesve që shohin me përbuzje amerikanët e vërtetë që gërmojnë për qymyr. Ai po i shtyn Shtetet e Bashkuara në rolin e renegatit global, duke refuzuar jo vetëm konsensusin shkencor për klimën, por konsensusin ndërkombëtar për veprim, duke u bashkuar vetëm me Sirinë dhe Nikaragua (që donte një marrëveshje edhe më të gjelbër). Kongresi nuk duket i gatshëm të paguajë për muret kufitare të Trump - dhe sigursht Meksika nuk do ta pagojë. Pra refuzimi i marrëveshjes së Parisit ishte një mënyrë më e lehtë për të shprehur temat e tij të “Kështjellës Amerikë” pa pasur nevojë të kalonte legjislacionin.

Trump po mbante një premtim të fushatës dhe njoftimi i tij në Kopështin e Trëndafilave ishte në thelb një fjalim fushate; Nuk ishte rastësisht që përmendi emrat e qyteteve të Youngstown, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan dhe Pittsburgh, Pensilvani – qytete industriale në tre shtetet e “Rripit të Ndryshkut” që e çuan atë në fitore. Veprimi i Trump nuk do të ketë shumë ndikim në afat të shkurtër, dhe ndoshta jo edhe në afat të gjatë. Pretendimet e tij se marrëveshja e Parisit do t’i detyronte bizneset të hiqnin vende pune dhe do detyronin konsumatorët të pagojnë çmime më të larta të energjisë ishin krejtesisht gënjeshtra, sepse një marrëveshje jo-detyruese nuk ka aq fuqi. Por lëvizja e Trump për ta braktisur marrëveshjen e Parisit do të ketë një ndikim të madh në pikëpamjen e bashkësisë globale mbi Amerikën dhe të një presidenti i cili preferon të troll-ojë botën e lirë sesa ta udhëheqë atë.

Natyrisht, troll-imi është thelbi politik i Amerikës ala Trump dhe lajmi i së enjtes përforcoi imazhin e tij si një rebel, i cili nuk do t’u lejojë të huajve të përpiqen t’i tregojnë Amerikës çfarë të bëj, madje edhe kur korporatat e mëdha, sekretari i shtetit, dhe vajza e tij Ivanka janë kundër vendimit. Ai ishte gjithashtu i mbështetur në identitetin e tij politik si negativ fotografik i Barak Obamës, duke çmontuar trashëgiminë progresive të Obamës, dhe duke hedhur rërë në fytyrat kozmopolite të qytetarëve të botës.

Por është e rëndësishme të kujtojmë se çfarë bëri dhe nuk bëri Obama kur udhëhoqi komunitetin e kombeve në një marrëveshje në Paris. Ai nuk lejoi që bota t’i diktonte Amerikës politikat e energjisë, sepse Parisi është vetëm një mekanizëm për shpalljen e angazhimeve kombëtare për të ulur nivelet e karbonit, jo për zbatimin e këtyre angazhimeve. The White House is standing by Donald Trump’s decision to pull the US out of the Paris accord on climate change – and refusing to say whether the president believes in the phenomenon or not.

While protesters outside the president’s residence in Washington made clear their objections, there are signs of division across the United States.

The administration’s top green official defended America’s record:

“We have nothing to be apologetic about as a country. We have reduced our CO2 footprint to levels of the early 1990s, in fact from 2000 to 2014 we reduced our carbon footprint by up over 18 percent. And that has been largely accomplished through innovation and technology, not government mandate, so when we look at issues like this we are leading with action and not words,” Scott Pruitt, head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), told a White House briefing.

The Democratic governors of New York, California and Washington states have vowed to respect the Paris deal.

Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, now the UN’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, says the US can still meet its commitments.

“The fact of the matter is, Americans don’t need Washington to meet our Paris commitment and Americans are not going to let Washington stand in the way of fulfilling it. That’s the message that mayors, governors and business leaders across the United States have been sending,” Bloomberg said during a visit to Paris.

The Paris accord signed in 2015 by nearly 200 countries, aims to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius or less by the end of the century, mainly through emissions cuts.

Evangelical Christian groups – most of whose supporters voted for Trump in last year’s election – have strongly condemned the president’s move.

One said it showed the administration cared “about the economy and jobs only”.

We’ve defended other nation’s borders while refusing to defend our own;

And spent trillions of dollars overseas while America’s infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay.

We’ve made other countries rich while the wealth, strength, and confidence of our country has disappeared over the horizon.

One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions upon millions of American workers left behind.

The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed across the entire world.

But that is the past. And now we are looking only to the future.

We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power.

From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land.

From this moment on, it’s going to be America First.

Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.

We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.

I will fight for you with every breath in my body – and I will never, ever let you down.

The Bible tells us, “how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”

We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity.

When America is united, America is totally unstoppable.

There should be no fear – we are protected, and we will always be protected.

We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement and, most importantly, we are protected by God.

Finally, we must think big and dream even bigger.

In America, we understand that a nation is only living as long as it is striving.

We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action – constantly complaining but never doing anything about it.

The time for empty talk is over.

Now arrives the hour of action.

Do not let anyone tell you it cannot be done. No challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America.

We will not fail. Our country will thrive and prosper again.

We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the Earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow.

A new national pride will stir our souls, lift our sights, and heal our divisions.
